What is neo vaginal?

Neo vaginal (also known as neovaginoplasty or vaginoplasty) is a surgical procedure that creates a new vagina in the pelvic area for individuals who were born without a vagina (such as those with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome) or who have lost their vagina due to injury or cancer.

The procedure involves taking tissue from the patient's own body, such as the colon or the peritoneum, to create a new vaginal canal. The new vagina is lined with a skin graft from elsewhere on the body, such as the thigh, to provide a surface that is capable of lubrication and pressure sensations. The surgery is usually done under general anesthesia.

The recovery period for neo vaginal surgery can take several weeks. Patients are advised to avoid any form of sexual activity for at least six weeks after surgery and to avoid using tampons for up to six months. Dilators may be used to maintain the shape of the new vagina and to prevent scar tissue from forming.

While neo vaginal surgery can provide significant benefits to those who require it, it is important to note that it is a major surgical procedure with potential risks and complications. Patients should thoroughly discuss the surgery with their healthcare provider and weigh the potential benefits against the risks before deciding to undergo the procedure.
